Question about LGBT daily life Empty Question about LGBT daily life

Message par Yasseryaam Jeu 25 Aoû 2016 - 10:20

Hey guys, I hope that u're doing good

I have a question
When i discuss with my friends (straight ones), about LGBT people, they always give me the impression that the life of LGBT people is so miserable,
miserable means depression, loneliness, insecurity and low self-esteem

As a bisexual i don't have theses characteristics and i never met an LGBT to discuss and discover this.

So i wanna ask u guys is that true ?

Ps: Sorry for the language, but i feel more comfortable with it

okay so from what i've seen (not much for that matter), experiences vary from an individual to an other. I'm gonna generalize a bit here to make it more simple ; i've noticed that people who are out by choice are living way more carelessly and act so unafected by comments and insults they get (which aren't that much, it's like people gave up)
but as opposed to that, people who are closeted or forced to come out are mostly living in fear or anger and bitterness. they also get treated way worse .
as it's still rough for both cases, you rarely see someone give in completely to that negativity (the self-hate hits once in a while though).
another thing, I guess it's way harder for gay men than it is for gay women . Because people wrongly links male homosexuality to femininity and femininity is always undervalued according to society

Question about LGBT daily life Empty Re: Question about LGBT daily life

Message par TeenIdle Jeu 25 Aoû 2016 - 23:01

Hey Yasseryaam, and thanks for this question !

I believe that it mostly depends on the person's psychology, their family and friend's relative open-mindedness, and to a certain extent, the environment they grew up in (as in if they got bullied or outcasted as a child)

All those things are factored in the synthesis of anxiety, loneliness depression and poor self-esteen, so due to the sheer variety and intrication of those factors, we cannot generalize but it's safe to say that quite a lot of LGBTs are facing those issues, maybe not all at once but rather as a reoccurent feeling now and then, so it's really indiviual-dependent.

I also think it depends on where you stand on the LGBT scale, as I feel it's more difficult for gay men and transexuals, and lesbians to a certain extent than bisexuals, because bisexuals tend to fit in more easily in the sense that they can get a girlfriend and not be bothered by society anymore, as opposed to gay or lesbians who can't.

That was my take on this interesting question, and I hope it answers it Wink

as much as you're right about the "straight passing" privilege bisexuals have when they date a different gender; it's like society always perceives them as exclusively attracted to the same gender once they find out about their sexual orientation

I think that what you've mentioned is true for the majority of LGBT people especially for those who are still in their closet. those who can't even imagine themselves talking about their sexual orientation either with family or friends and the situation is much worse when your friends are straight, in this case you're gonna feel so lonely hence it depends on the poeple you're surrounded by but sometimes the more you accept yourself the more you no longer care about the homophobic people around you. Actually you will just hate the fact that you're compelled to deal with them everyday.

I don't think being LGBT is the main cause of the psychological issues you have mentioned below as it can be caused by genetics, the nature of the environment and many other things.. but in my own experience, as a bisexual also, it has caused me a lot of stress when i first started noticing that i am attracted to both genders at a very young age. the fact that i could "pass" as straight has helped in few situations but it caused me more harm than good as it was really stressful to pretend not to belong to that very hated minority in our society (keep in mind that i have grew up around many homophobic and of course biphobic friends), but then i started owning my sexuality and removing toxic people from my social circle and it was the best decision i've ever made... So i guess it depends on your entourage and how strong of a personality you have to get to the point where you genuinely don't care about what others may or may not think about you.
